There is also a 0.6 million tonnes per year urea plant. The first complex comprises the two Tringen plants which are joint ventures between the Government and the Norwegian firm Norsk Hydro; and a third ammonia plant, the oldest in the country, which was formerly owned by W.R. Grace and acquired by Norsk Hydro in 1991. The second, fertilizer complex which is now owned by Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) comprises four ammonia plants. One plant is owned by Pt Lisas Nitrogen Limited (formerly Farmland Misschem), 600,000 tonnes per annum technology – haber, cost – US300Mn, Shareholders Mississippi Chemicals 50% and KOCH Minerals ( an American Company) 50%. KOCH Minerals services LLC bought Farmland Shares. CNC also owns another plant, the 1850 tonnes/day Nitro 2000 plant, which commenced production in 2004.
Natural Gas Demand
In 2004, Atlantic Liquefied Natural Gas Company (ALNG) was the main user of extracted natural gas, accounting for some 56% of the total sales of natural gas in that year. Most of the gas received by ALNG is utilized in the production of LNG, while some natural gas liquids are also produced at the plant, which is piped to PPGPL for separation into propane, butane and natural gas gasoline. The gas demand by ALNG increased substantially in 2002 and 2003 mainly due to the commissioning of two new liquefying trains. The remainder of the gas was sold by the NGC to various customers. The petrochemical industry accounted for 68% of NGC sales in 2004; power generation, 20%; iron and steel, 6.9%; gas processing, 2.1%; and other including refinery, 3%; Among petrochemicals, the main users were: the ammonia, methanol and urea industries, with 59%, 40%, and 1% of the total petrochemical sales, respectively.
Methanol
There are six existing plants having an overall capacity of approximately 3.1 million tonnes per annum:The first plant, the Trinidad and Tobago Methanol Company (TTMC) started in 1984 and was formerly 100% state owned. It was fully divested in 1997 to CIL Financial/Ferrostaal/Helm/GE Capital Group. The second methanol plant, the Caribbean Methanol Company (CMC) was established in 1994. The plant is jointly owned by Clico Energy, a subsidiary of a local insurance conglomerate, the German contracting firm of Ferrostaal A.G. and the Canadian marketeer, Methanex.A third plant, TTMC II was established in 1996 and is owned by TTMC.A fourth methanol plant, Methanol IV Company Limited, established in 1998 is owned by the Clico/Ferrostaal/Helm/GE Capital Group.A fifth plant is owned by Methanex, formerly owned by Titan. A sixth plant, Atlas Methanol, commenced production in 2004. Under ConstructionCommencing June 2005:Methanol Holdings Trinidad and Tobago Limited, in which local financial giant, Clico Energy, has a major shareholding, is currently pursuing the construction of the country’s 7th Methanol plant with a capacity of 5000 tonnes per day.

YARA
The strong and successful joint venture ownership of the Trinidad Nitrogen Co Limited (Tringen) is being maintained by Yara International ASA, which owns 100 percent of the Yara Plant and 49 percent of the Tringen I and II Plants through the share structure of Tringen. Nearly all of the site’s annual production of 1.3 million metric tons (99 percent) is exported. This is a significant portion of Trinidad and Tobago’s total export, making Trinidad and Tobago the world’s leading exporter of ammonia.Key dates1966 Construction of Yara ammonia plant1977 Construction of Tringen 1 ammonia plant 1988 Construction of Tringen 2 ammonia plant 1991 Acquisition by Norsk Hydro ASAProduction volumes: Ammonia: 800,000 tonsTotal production of Yara's wholly owned plant HAT and Yara's share of production at Tringen 1 & 2 based on Yara's share of the equity.
PCS Nitrogen Trinidad
PCS Trinidad – a subsidiary of PotashCorp, is strategically located to serve the US Gulf Coast, the Caribbean and Latin America. It is one of the world’s largest nitrogen complexes, with four ammonia plants and one urea plant on more than 130 acres of Trinidad’s sheltered west coast. It benefitsfrom the country’s plentiful and favourably-priced natural gas.
The facility utilizes the most advanced technology in the industry to produce ammonia and urea products. Ammonia is made into nitrogen solutions for fertilizers. Nitric acid, another ammonia product in high demand, is used to make synthetic fibers, plastics, fertilizers and metal treatments, and urea is used in fertilizers, adhesives and feed supplements.
PCS Trinidad’s ammonia complex consists of four ammonia units producing approximately 2.4 million short tons of ammonia annually. The utilities needed to run these units include three cooling towers, three ammonia storage tanks, steam, plant and instrument air support and demineralized water for making steam.
PCS Trinidad’s urea plant has a capacity of 2,185 short tons per day of urea in granular form, which is suitable for both direct application and for blending with othersolid fertilizers. The two main ingredients in the manufacture of urea – ammonia and carbon dioxide –are both supplied by the ammonia complex.

Processing involves the extraction of natural gas liquids (NGLs). The high quality processed natural gas is delivered by our customer to downstream facilities that use it as a fuel and feedstock to operate at optimal efficiencies. We also fractionate the extracted NGLs into three components: propane, butane and natural gasoline. The propane and butane are marketed in the Caribbean and Central America and the natural gasoline is marketed internationally.
